DHET Entrepreneurship and Career Awareness Campaign, on the 29th of August 2024
The Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, hosted an Entrepreneurship and Career Awareness Campaign marking the end of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training College Month at South West Gauteng TVET College, Dobsonville Campus, Soweto on the 29th of August 2024.
This special event was dedicated to highlighting the exciting opportunities and career paths within the artisan-related fields of study. As part of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College Month, this campaign aimed to inspire and engage learners by showcasing the diverse and dynamic career opportunities available in technical and vocational disciplines, featuring a range of activities designed to provide valuable insights into artisan careers.
In his introductory address, Mr. Joey Monyamane, the Principal of South West Gauteng TVET College, emphasized the significance of commemorating TVET month. The objective of this observance is to dispel misconceptions about TVET college programs being inferior while also capitalizing on the opportunities to attain post-school qualifications available at TVET Colleges.
Mr. Monyamane stated, “At South West Gauteng TVET College, we are dedicated to imparting students with the skills and knowledge essential for success in an ever-evolving world. Whether through traditional in-person instruction or our expanding distance learning initiatives, which includes the forthcoming inauguration of a specialized distance learning campus in 2025, we are prepared to cater to the needs of every learner.”
Echoing the words of the Principal, the Acting Regional Manager Mr Pule Patrick Mashele said that TVET month aims to raise awareness about the importance of considering self-employment or entrepreneurship as a career option.
“TVET colleges are including entrepreneurship in the TVET Month Programme, and they are forming partnerships to support student entrepreneurs. South West Gauteng TVET College has set up an Entrepreneurship Hub that focuses on various areas, and its students have achieved success in regional and national entrepreneurship competitions,” said the Acting Regional Manager.
He also indicated since August is women’s month, they are committed to building a South Africa where young women are empowered to take charge and authority, just like the courageous women who marched to the union buildings in 1956, urging young women to consider enrolling in engineering courses at South West Gauteng TVET college or another TVET college in Gauteng for the 2025 academic year.
During the event, participants engaged in interactive workshops where they acquired practical skills and knowledge from industry experts in various artisan trades such as carpentry, electrical engineering, plumbing, and more. Additionally, they had the opportunity to attend entrepreneurship panels and learn from accomplished entrepreneurs who have established successful businesses in the artisan sector, gaining insights into the essential skills and entrepreneurial mindset needed to transform a passion into a lucrative career.
Furthermore, attendees received guidance from career advisors and industry professionals, enabling them to explore potential career paths and educational prospects in technical and vocational fields. The event also featured exhibitions and live demonstrations showcasing artisan skills, providing a platform for current students and graduates to present innovative projects.
The campaign was an excellent opportunity for learners to explore the benefits of pursuing a career in artisan trades, which offered not only job stability and high demand but also the chance to contribute meaningfully to various industries and communities.
