South West Gauteng College is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution, formerly an FET college, operating under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in terms of the Continuing Education and Training Act, Act No.16 of 2006, as amended. The College is accredited by Umalusi, Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and several Sector
Education and Training Authorities (SETA’s) to offer education and training, mostly in the FET band (NQF Level 2 to 4), while some programmes are also offered in the Higher Education band, namely the N4 to N6
levels.
With its head office located at Molapo Campus in Soweto, the College has campuses spread across Soweto (three), Roodepoort (two), and Randburg (one), as well as the “Land is Wealth Farm” in Sterkfontein. The College has recently expanded further with the acquisition of two new sites in Florida: the New Business Development Unit Office Park and the Florida Site: School of Science, Technology and Distance Learning. These new sites, together with the introduction of Occupational Programmes, strengthen the College’s footprint and enhance its ability to deliver cutting-edge vocational and occupational training.
Occupational Programmes are a vital addition to the College’s offering, designed to respond directly to the needs of industry, employers, and communities. Unlike traditional academic pathways, these programmes are highly practical, competency-based, and tailored to specific occupations. They ensure that learners acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also hands-on skills that make them immediately employable. By aligning training with workplace standards and industry requirements, Occupational Programmes bridge the gap between education and employment, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to the economy. They also provide opportuni-
ties for reskilling and upskilling, making them invaluable for adults and professionals seeking to adapt to changing labour market demands.
The Distance Learning and e-learning mode will now be driven through the Florida Site, positioning the College as a leader in flexible and accessible education. With this expansion, the College proudly declares, “we now surface everywhere!” Since 2007, TVET colleges have offered the three-year TVET curriculum culminating in the National Certificate (Vocational) [NC(V)], a qualification that opens two doors for graduates. With its deliberate vocational slant, NC(V) Level 4 graduates are well prepared to enter the job market, while also having the option to pursue post-NQF Level 4 education at Universities or Universities of Technology, depending on their
results. Entry requirements for Higher Education pathways are available via the College’s website, Student Support, Marketing Offices, and the College Prospectus.
Students can enrol for vocational qualifications from Grade 9 upwards, though the programme is most suitable for those with Grade 11 or 12. Since 2018, the College has offered fee-free education to South Africa’s poor and working-class citizens, with joint family annual incomes below R350,000, supported by government and DHET.
South West Gauteng College remains a true citadel of education and training, serving communities across Soweto, Roodepoort, Randburg, Florida, and beyond. Guided by its motto, “Valued Skills for Life,” the College continues to build futures rooted in skills, innovation, and opportunity. With the expansion into Occupational Programmes, the College affirms its commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically prepared but also occupationally competent, ensuring that every student is equipped with skills that endure, empower, and uplift for a lifetime.
